Apple today provided developers with the fourth beta of an upcoming 9.2.2 update to tvOS, the operating system that runs on the fourth-generation Apple TV. The fourth tvOS 9.2.2 beta comes one week after the release of the third beta and more than a month after the minor tvOS 9.2.1 update. tvOS 9.2.2 has been in testing since May 23.

tvOS betas are more difficult to install than beta updates for iOS and OS X. Installing the tvOS beta requires the Apple TV to be connected to a computer with a USB-C to USB-A cable, with the software downloaded and installed via iTunes or Apple Configurator. Once a beta profile has been installed on the device through iTunes, new beta releases will be available over the air.

tvOS 9.2.2, like tvOS 9.2.1, is a minor 9.x.x update, focusing on bug fixes and performance improvements that aren't immediately obvious. Apple's release notes have suggested the update includes bug fixes and security improvements, and no outward-facing changes were spotted in the first three betas, but this post will be updated if we discover any new features or fixes in the fourth beta of tvOS 9.2.2.

Apple is also working on the next-generation version of tvOS, tvOS 10, which includes new Siri features, single sign-on cable authentication, and more. tvOS 10, currently available to developers, will be released to the public in the fall.

Now Facebook to limit posts from Pages in News Feed

Facebook’s next News Feed update could be bad news for online publishers.

Facebook announced Wednesday it is limiting the amount of content from Pages on News Feeds to allow users to see more posts from family and friends.

Maintaining a relevant and interesting News Feed is important to satisfying users, said Adam Mosseri, vice president for product management at Facebook. Many users, especially those with many connections, told the service important posts from close friends often do not appear on their News Feed, which prompted the company to introduce this new upgrade.

“Stories in News Feed are ranked – so that people can see what they care about first, and don’t miss important stuff from their friends,” Mosseri said in a press release. “One of our most important jobs is getting this ranking right."

Lars Backstom, engineering director at Facebook, acknowledges the update may cause reach and referral traffic to decline for some Pages, especially those not receiving many shares or interaction. This could mean companies using Facebook to distribute their content, like media publishers, could see a decline in reads.

Facebook also shared their News Feed Values with users in an effort to be transparent on changes. The values include connecting people with posts of family and friends first, while also entertaining and providing informational content from their liked Pages.

“We are not in the business of picking which issues the world should read about,” Mosseri said in a press release. “We arein the business of connecting people and ideas – and matching people with the stories they find most meaningful.”

Facebook recently came under fire for their lack of transparency when choosing stories for Trending Topics. After a former company employee revealed those who work on the Trending Topics feature deliberately did not promote conservative viewpoints, Facebook made changes to the feature and met with conservative leaders to address the issue.

The Pokémon Go will be available in July for iOS and Android

Pokémon Go, the augmented reality free-to-play mobile game from Niantic, will be available this July. Nintendo announced the release window during its second-day E3 live stream, but didn't give a concrete day. The company did say the game's accessory, a wrist-worn wearable called Pokémon Go Plus that lets you play the game without using your smartphone, will be available for $34.99. Unfortunately, it won't be quite ready at launch, Nintendo clarified.

Pokémon Go is an ambitious AR title being developed by Niantic, the makers of Android game Ingress, in conjunction with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. In our first hands-on look at the game earlier this month, we saw exactly how the game incorporates the same real-world exploration elements of Ingress with a pokémon twist. The core gameplay will involve looking through your smartphone camera while the software integrates the digital creatures into the environment.

On a deeper level, you'll be able to assume the role of a trainer and travel to notable points of interest near where you live — or where you happen to be visiting — to capture pokémon and battle at gyms, which are located at notable landmarks. At any given moment, the gyms will be controlled by one of three groups, the Red, Blue, or Yellow team. You can take control of gyms for your pledged faction by battling your own pokémon, and teaming up with others in the real world raises your chances of victory.


In its E3 live stream, Nintendo clarified further that players will be able to level up their trainers to catch stronger pokémon. There will also be a "candy" rewards, which players can use to evolve pokémon. As for the sought-after legendaries, pokémon like Mewtwo and Zapdos, Nintendo doesn't appear to have decided whether it will host local events in different cities to allow players to meet up and capture them. Trading between players is in the works, but won't be available at launch.

The company did say that Go will have some kind of tie-in with the franchise's main handheld titles, but we don't know how that will work just yet. The two latest games, Pokémon Sun and Moon, will be out this November.

After more than 18 years of service, faithfully shuttling your messages, emojis and A/S/L requests back and forth across the internet, Yahoo has announced they will be signing off and closing its old Messenger app for good on August 5th. The app launched in 1998 under the incredibly dated name "Yahoo Pager," but is heading off into the software sunset after the company introduced a more modern version last year.

As VentureBeat points out, the old Messenger was popular with users in the Asia-Pacific region, and according to Bloomberg, the old Yahoo Messenger actually still had a weirdly strong following among oil traders who used the app to bid and gossip on commodities prices. Apparently those two groups aren't enough to keep supporting such a dinosaur of an app. In a blog post, Yahoo explained the shut down:

While today we provide basic interoperation between the legacy product and the new Messenger, we encourage all of our users to complete their transition to the new Yahoo Messenger as we will no longer support the legacy platform as of August 5, 2016. We intend to continue our focused efforts on the new Messenger, with a goal of delivering the best experience to our users.
After August 5th, anyone still using the legacy Messenger will no longer be able to log in or send messages. Same goes for messages sent through third-party apps built on top of Yahoo's API. The new Messenger, however, is still available on the App Store and Google Play.

Apple is famous for its ability to keep a secret. But consistent leaks have shown the company’s upcoming iPhone 7 plus may be both more boring and more controversial than anyone expected. And now it seems Apple’s biggest secrets really have spilled…

This week both myself and MacRumors were approached independently by different Apple accessory retailers who produced iPhone 7 cases that match exactly. The result is enlightening but also disappointing.

Goodbye Headphone Jack
Yes, news I first broke back in June 2014 now looks certain to happen because both the physical cases sent to MacRumors and renders I attained from Olixar cases through popular online retailer MobileFun show no dedicated cutout for the headphone jack on either the top or bottom of the iPhone 7.

Instead what we see is a more symmetrical design keeping the Lightning port in the middle but allowing for a pair of speakers either side. Supply chain contacts tell me Apple is still testing both single and dual speaker variants of the iPhone 7, but it appears the company has now settled on significantly boosting its external audio.

This may prove some consolation for those disappointed by the loss of the headphone jack and prospect of needing a Lighting port adaptor.

Single Lens, But Boosted Rear Camera
The second aspect both leaked case designs separately confirmed is the iPhone 7 will sadly not be getting the dual camera setup of the iPhone 7 Plus. But on the plus side, it will be getting a much larger single rear sensor than has been seen on either the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S.

You can spot this from the cases’ much lower and wider camera cutouts (though one discrepancy is tapering). Given Apple’s reticence to increase megapixel count and the fact the iPhone 6S only jumped to 12MP last year, the smart money would instead be on a dramatic increase in individual pixel size.

Larger individual pixels help take in more light therefore producing better results in poor lighting conditions. The iPhone 6S in particular suffered in this area compared to a number of rival Android handsets (Galaxy S7, Nexus 6P, LG G5) so it makes sense this would be an Apple priority.

Then again the dual camera setup of the iPhone 7 Plus is sure to be the bigger draw.

Ageing Design
MacRumors’ case shows it fits almost perfectly around an iPhone 6S, so it does indeed appear that Apple will stick with a virtually identical iPhone 6 design for the third generation running.

Optimists will say this is because Apple has now perfected its handset design, but I’d argue it needs ergonomic improvements to feel better in the hand and much smaller top and bottom bezels. The company also needs to show investors that its famously innovative hardware division remains on the cutting edge.

Instead it appears we’ll have to wait for the redesigned ‘all glass’ iPhone 8 (yes, 8) in 2017 for that to happen.

One More Thing

What goes without saying is Apple’s software prowess means the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus may still have plenty of tricks left when it comes to usability. This is especially true given the high hopes for iOS 10, which will accompany both phones at launch.

Still, from a pure hardware perspective, the iPhone 7 itself looks like it won’t be the model to reinvigorate slowing sales. Happily the future beyond it looks a lot more exciting…

Samsung Galaxy Beta Program shows off a new look, does without App Drawer

Samsung’s flagship phones are synonymous with several key things: (1) They use the company’s most advanced Super AMOLED displays, (2) they have seen a major build quality upgrade recently, and (3) they are tricked out with TouchWiz, the Korean OEM’s customized Android skin. Along with the radical redesign that took place in 2015 with the Galaxy S6, a decision was made to tone down the extent of TouchWiz’s overtones, removing what some might have felt to be superfluous bloat. While the newest build seen on the Galaxy S7 certainly isn’t stock Android by any means, it seems a major UX overhaul may be coming soon:

Note UX Beta 4

According to a new report by PLAYfuldroid.com, users in South Korea and China who own a Galaxy Note 5 are eligible to partake in a “New Note UX” beta program. The post explains that while the test device itself may be the note, this August the layout will supposedly make its way to the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 Edge, the Galaxy S6 Edge+, the Galaxy S7, and the Galaxy S7 Edge. It is not clear if this means the beta will be made available, or if Samsung will indeed issue a major UX update with these changes at that time.

Note UX Beta 1Visually speaking, there is a major mention to be made, specifically with respect to that which is curiously missing: an App Drawer. It seems that Samsung may indeed by seeking to sideline the second screen(s) that contain all the user’s apps, instead placing them all on consecutive home screens.

This approach has been seen before in Chinese OEM products like those from Lenovo and even last year’s Axon Phone. More recently it surfaced on LG’s G5, which promptly made headlines for the lack thereof. LG in turn, then had to release a “new” skin option that restored its old App Drawer.

Also worth mentioning is the redesigned icons, namely the Dialer and the Messaging apps. The phone now features a circle inside the square and the latter has chat bubbles instead of an e-mail icon as exists on the Galaxy S7.

The Notification Shade has also been altered, with the various toggles now sans the white circular background that appears in the current build of TouchWiz. The result is much more similar to the stock Android approach.

Even the Settings menu has been changed to look more like stock Android. Gone are the seemingly infinite number of categories that Samsung currently uses, instead much more concise headers that contain multiple setting selections inside. Even the Storage setting screen looks drastically different. The top ribbon indicates the latest files that have been downloaded, for example.

While this story is still in its infancy, it’s highly likely that what’s being shown here is a preview of the new UX that will launch with the Galaxy Note 7 come August. It’s unknown however, as to if this will be a default TouchWiz layout change, if the ability to add an App Drawer will be optional, if this will ultimately be just a skin that is available in the Theme Store, or if nothing will ever come to pass.

Suffice to say that, based on the reaction to LG’s removal of the App Drawer, there might be quite a bit of backlash among some Samsung users. The move comes at a time when it is believed that Google itself may be seeking to remove the App Drawer from the next version of its mobile OS platform, known currently as “Android N”. Some feel the decision is to make the presentation more like iOS, while others say it removes confusion for those people who can’t find their apps.

Could the App Drawer go bye-bye?

Assuming this will go through, it raises the question: Is Samsung doing this of its own volition, or is this a product of Google’s “suggesting” such. Several years ago recode published a story that indicated Samsung was specifically cited as having arguably “angered” Google to the point where Mountain View had a sit-down with the partner OEM to discuss ways to make TouchWiz more similar to the Android vision Google itself has put forth. Recently HTC has worked with Google to remove excess bloat and duplicate Apps from the recently released HTC 10, though the device still has an App Drawer.

Wrap Up

While the new look might cause some concern for some, it’s useful to remember that Android lets users install any number of custom launchers without having to root the device. Google’s own Google Now Launcher is an option, as is Nova Launcher and countless others.
