PEOPLE LOVE TAKING selfies in front of famous buildings, and Instagram teems with people posing alongside storied landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Burj Khalifa, and the Empire State Building. This crazy political campaign has added another location to the list. Two, actually: the Trump Tower skyscrapers in Chicago and New York.
Those with strong opinions on the presumptive Republican presidential nominee gleefully flip off the Donald’s monuments to himself and post the pics on Instagram. Others are less profane, choosing instead to express themselves with a thumbs-down or a gagging motion. To make sure everyone gets the point, some add the hashtag #fucktrump. “Childish and ineffectual, sure—but not unsatisfying. Best part was getting praise from passersby while I was shooting it,” reads the caption accompanying @tym27‘s contribution to this growing body of pin-sharp political commentary.
Although it’s hard to say just when this phenomenon started, a quick search of geotags reveals at least 30 in the past week alone. To be fair, Trump, who long ago mastered Twitter and Instagram, enjoys strong support on those platforms, and photos for and against the guy often devolve into heated arguments for and against his candidacy. Social media provides many opportunities to express your opinion. A presidential candidate with his name on giant buildings simply makes it that much easier.
